Q. I’ve recently purchased some red wines when I was touring wine country in the Okanagan, should I decant these wines?
A. A large majority of red wines from BC are ready to pour and drink. Some wine lovers will decant a younger red to oxygenate and improve the flavor. Using an aerator in a young red will usually improve the taste. A serious red such as a more expensive reserve Meritage blend, Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah which should be aged for several years may need to be decanted. This is to remove sediment that will form after a number of years in the bottle. These sediments do not affect the flavour of the wine but are removed to clear the wine and make it enjoyable to drink.
