Wine – Brand New BC Releases
Haywire Pinot Gris 2013
If you have to try only one Pinot Gris from the Okanagan it should be the new 2013 Pinot Gris from Haywire. It has a complex and signature style that combines the best of the new and old world. Generous amounts of up front fruit aromas and taste on this wine with a mingling of peach, apricot, lemon and grapefruit with a hint a fresh herbs. It gets even better on the palate with a dry, full structured mouth feel and lingering citrus oil and mineral components. This wine is an excellent and welcome change of pace from the usual offerings of BC Pinot Gris. www.haywirewinery.com Song match for this wine is Rod Stewart & Ron Wood – Mandolin Wind
Haywire, Lunar New Year White 2013, Summerland VQA, BC
Hip blend of Chard, Gewürztraminer and a wise splash of Viognier that adds body via the lemon oil character of this grape. Touch off dry with tangerine, floral, tropical fruit and honey aromas. Medium bodied with a creamy follow through, a happy addition to any occasion.
Haywire, Lunar New Year, Red, 2012, Summerland VQA, BC
Gamay Noir meets Syrah! An interesting combo highlighting, cherry, blackcurrant leaf, clove and a dusting of pepper. Seriously easy drinking with low acids and tannins this wine is sure to be a party pleaser this season.
Spierhead, Chardonnay, Gentleman Farmer Vineyard, 2012, Kelowna VQA, BC
Classic Kiwi take on this Chardonnay; gala apple, ripe pear, melon nose with telltale signs of toasty, vanilla spice via the kiss of French oak. Deft touch on this single vineyard offering, beautiful balance of oak and fruit. www.spierheadwinery.com
Spierhead, Pinot Noir, Kelowna VQA, BC
Burgundy on a budget, this Pinot has all the hallmarks of a Burgundy Premier Cru. Earthy, chalky, with plenty of raspberry, cranberry and redcurrant fruit. A warm dose of vanilla and toast on the palate, well balanced and just darn delicious.
Brew – Winter Wine Ale Review
Bomber Brewing, Old Fat Heater
Spicy, hoppy flavor mingled with malty caramel finish. Rest your weary boots by the fire and crack one open. Slightly bitter finish 8%. www.bomberbrewing.com
Granville Island Brewing, Lions Winter Ale
Love the warm vanilla, clove and nutmeg aromas. Malty full flavored and savory, low hops add to the creamy texture. The ultimate Whistler skiing brew 5.5%. www.gib.ca
Mission Springs Brewing, Mr. Winter’s Dashing Pumpkin Winter Ale
Mashed pumpkin, allspice, cinnamon and slightly sweetish malts. Hops on the low side, so sip it slowly and get ready to watch the Canucks play 7.4%. www.missionsprings.ca
Legend Distillery, Shadow in the Lake Vodka, Naramata Bench, BC
I’ve tried many Vodkas straight up, but this local Vodka was the smoothest and tastiest Vodka I’ve ever tried. You can sip this like a fine Cognac due to the hand crafted nature of this spirit. They use a 20 column still and 100% of the best wheat grown in British Columbia. www.legenddistilling.com
Legend Distillery, Doctor’s Orders GIN, Naramata Bench, BC
Another fine sipping Gin made from local junipers, coriander, citrus and lavender. If you mix it only add a bit of tonic because it would be a shame to mask these wonderfully vibrant aromas and tastes. All BC ingredients in this Gin. I would prescribe this beverage for anyone needing 200 cc of all out flavours and smoothness.
